When I was a kid I read a book from the perspective of Kaʻiulani. Something about her story stuck with me then and still stays with me now. In one sense she was fragile and sensitive, because she clearly cared very deeply about what happened to her nation (Hawai’i), and experienced a lot of pain and suffering because of it. She was also extremely determined to do what she could no matter how hopeless or how much of an inconvenience to her personally. She seemed to me to be very delicate, and yet made of steel at the same time.As I drew in the lines and shadows of her face, I got the sense that this was the face of a woman who would carry on doing what she felt to be the right thing, even when failure was possible, and maybe even imminent. In her, I see quiet, persistent courage in the face of turmoil.

I hope that this portrait brings you a sense of courage, patience, beauty — or whatever you need most. I am honoured that you have taken the time to support my work. Thank you.
